Is It in My Head?

August 2011

“The Bush administration cited Gaddafi’s shrewd decision to dismantle a crude nuclear weapons program and its payment of reparations to the families of the victims of Pan Am 103 to justify the opening of an American embassy in Tripoli. Neither of these empty gestures translated into a fundamental change in the nature of the Gaddafi tyranny. Gaddafi cunningly suspended the foreign terror operations but continued to terrorize the Libyan people with the confidence of a tyrant with a new lease on life. President Bush never openly condemned the repression in Libya, despite his lofty rhetoric about America’s commitment to democracy in the Middle East at the onset of the war in Iraq. The appeasement with Libya was always about petroleum, never about principle.

September 11 deepened the Bush administration’s disturbing relationship with Gaddafi. The administration secretly reached out to Libyan intelligence to cooperate in the global war on terrorism. In their memoirs, former CIA officials describe surreal meetings with Libyan intelligence chieftains whom they suspected of involvement in the destruction of Pan Am 103.

Libyan officials were only too pleased to identify, detain and torture Libyans who gravitated to Al Qaeda at the behest of the CIA. Perhaps the collaboration with Libyan intelligence seemed like a morally acceptable compromise after the slaughter of Americans on 9/11, but the secret partnership with Gaddafi served emboldened him in his secret campaign to ratchet up the repression in Libya.”

Tell the White House to Stand Strong in Stopping Deportation of DREAMers! → americasvoiceonline.org

President Obama recently announced a new immigration policy firmly grounded in principles of smart law enforcement. If this policy is fully implemented, it would focus enforcement on dangerous criminals, and keep young people eligible for the DREAM Act (and other immigrants who have been in the country for years) safe from deportation.

This shift in policy is long overdue. Far too many good people have been arrested, jailed and deported during the first 3 years of the Administration. Now, we will keep pushing to make sure the Administration puts its announcement into practice and stands up to the anti-immigrant extremists who are trying their hardest to block this common-sense policy.

However, the far-right is flooding the White House with calls, emails and faxes, demanding the continuation of a radical agenda to deport 11 million people.

Will you sign our letter to the White House telling President Obama that you will stand with him as he confronts the flood of opposition in his path towards a more just enforcement policy?

“A new report by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) concluded that total abstinence is an unrealistic goal of effective treatment for some addicts — a conclusion that some may find disheartening. This assertion was just one of many that refute dangerous, common misconceptions about addiction. According to the study, the inability to abstain is not a problem of free will that causes addiction, but a symptom of it. What’s more, addiction is a chronic disease of fundamental brain circuitry, and its causes and maintenance have nothing to do with addicts’ behaviors or emotional states. They, too, are simply symptoms of flawed brain functioning. But old misconceptions have dangerous implications.” —Are We Killing Drug Addicts Like Amy Winehouse?

“Koch Industries and its army of subsidiary corporations operate 57 chemical facilities in the US and have fought in and out of Congress to avoid a comprehensive safety solution that would mitigate fallout from any natural and man-made disasters, according to a new investigation from Greenpeace.

Even though the Koch brothers’ businesses put 4.4 million people at risk with pollutants, the Kochs have poured millions into lobbyists’ coffers and political contributions to ensure their bottom line stays unchanged by the most basic safety precaution.

The latest chapter of the Koch brothers disdain for public service and safety confirms much of what we’ve learned through our Koch Brothers Exposed campaign, which has linked the billionaire right wing brothers to disastrous oil spills, devastating land grabs and attacks on Social Security and public education.”

“Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein, who just got himself a lawyer, may be facing the possibility of sinking, either because of his own words in April 2010 before the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) or because his shipmates are distancing themselves in a legal version of every man for himself. Or both.

Recall that Blankfein emphatically told the subcommittee, “We didn’t have a massive short against the housing market, and we certainly did not bet against our clients.” The 650-page subcommittee report presented on April 13, 2011, which cites Blankfein 79 times, begs to differ.

The report accused Goldman of trading against its clients by simultaneously shorting certain subprime mortgage securities (a.k.a. “cats and dogs”) while stuffing them into the collateralized debt obligations it sold. It also suggested that Goldman executives, including Blankfein, misled Congress in testimony surrounding the Abacus CDO, Hudson, Timberwolf, and other deals, by saying it didn’t have a big short.

The top lesson I learned before leaving Goldman in the wake of Enron was Goldman’s foremost internal policy is to protect Goldman. It’s also to protect the most powerful members. When cracks manifest in the corporate armor, those two policies are at odds.”

In May of this year, thousands of people gathered at the White House to spontaneously celebrate the death of Osama bin Laden. The Park Police did not ask them for a permit, did not ask them to disperse, and there were no paddy wagons called to haul them away. Of course killing Osama bin Laden was something the President repeatedly spoke of with pride, earning himself not only a bump in his poll numbers but also a Saturday Night Live send-up.

He’s had serious health problems for years, which is likely the reason for his departure — not a shake-up. Perhaps you should read up on it.

What the f*&k does his health have to do with my lack of regard for the guy?

Anyway, I knew about that for some time. Ernie, I’ve been on the internets™ for some time. I know Apple products pretty well, I tried programing BASIC on an Apple II probably before you were born. Check out my mini-rant about CHRP. There isn’t much that you could tell me about Jobs or Apple that I don’t know.

Please make use of Disqus, I find exchanges between the two of us inconsiderate clutter on other tumblr’s dashboards.

Incidence of potentially avoidable urgent readmissions and their relation to all-cause urgent readmissions

By Carl van Walraven MD MSc, Alison Jennings MA, Monica Taljaard PhD, Irfan Dhalla MD…

This Canadian study provides a great example of how we, in the United States, “think up” policies to control health spending while improving quality, and then apply those policies simply because they “should work.” Many of these policy decisions are used to divert our attention from much more effective measures such as a single payer national health program.
