Support the Testing Boycott - Ice the ISAT!

Administration of this meaningless test means students will lose hours of valuable classroom instruction time, disrupting as many as ten school days. The ISAT is not used for any valid purpose and will not be given after the 2013-2014 school year. CPS plans to force this test on students at the same time that students also are required to take NWEA MAP tests, new Interim Benchmark Tests, REACH Performance Tasks, ACCESS tests, NAEP tests, pilot Common Core tests and more.

Over-testing of students has come with real costs to their education. Students need fewer tests and more access to arts, languages and a broad, rich curriculum. Students need meaningful and educationally appropriate assessments, not more standardized tests.

The concerns of parents and educators have been ignored for too long! We support the parents, teachers and students who have taken action for better schools and against over-testing.

The New Temp Economy

When we think of temp workers, the image that comes to mind for many Americans is “Kelly Girls” — post WWII-era women, mostly young housewives, doing light office work like filing and bookkeeping for a little extra cash around the holidays.

But low-wage, temporary work is becoming a new normal in post-recession America, and today’s temp workers are no longer in it temporarily. Big corporations like Walmart, Nike and Frito-Lay have recognized that the temp system saves them money on things like health care, workers’ compensation claims and unemployment taxes, and they’ve started using temp agencies to fill traditional factory jobs. These blue-collar temp workers are mostly immigrants and minorities driven into the temp system due to a lack of options in an economy that increasingly favors corporations over workers. They rise early each morning to sit in a temp agency waiting room and hope that their name is called. The United States now has more temporary workers than ever before. And, while temporary work often increases during recessions, it usually goes down as the economy improves. But this time, economists predict that temp work will remain high.

In this report, Producer Karla Murthy visits a temp agency in Chicago, where she speaks to both workers who have suffered abuses on the job and members of the Chicago Workers Collaborative, an organization that advocates for workers’ rights. She also speaks with Michael Grabell, a ProPublica reporter whose reporting for the recent series, “Temp Land: Working in the New Economy” is featured in this piece.

Nine minutes about what it’s like to get any damn job in America in this day and age.

ADM last year reported net sales of about $90 billion. Over the decades, it has been the beneficiary of billions of dollars in federal subsidies and other programs. That makes the $1.2 million a year in job-creation Illinois tax credits for which the company has applied as part of an anticipated in-state relocation of its global headquarters to Chicago look like a glorified “25 cents off” offer.

Yep. A company with a $24 billion market cap is haggling over a $24 million, 20-year incentive from a state that’s teetering on the edge of insolvency. Then again, that’s how she got rich, dearie.
Hey you stupid black n——- b——, how does it feel to walk in an all-white neighborhood?” Diamond, 45, yelled from his porch, according to a police report. The woman said she kept walking and Diamond yelled, “You hear me? You must be from Englewood,” the police report states.

The woman, who was wearing a nurse’s uniform and had a stethoscope around her neck, told Diamond, “I’m not from around here” and said she worked at Resurrection Medical Center.

Diamond, who is white, then got off the porch and ran after her, screaming, “If I see you in my neighborhood again, I’m going to rape you and hang you from a tree,” the police report said.

"He jumped off his porch and chased me down,” the woman said. He tried to grab her but she was able to get away, she said.

We continue our series looking into ALEC, the American legislative exchange Council, as they celebrate their 40th anniversary in Chicago. Six people were arrested Monday when protesters descended upon the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago to push back against the impending visit of ALEC.

Now joining us to talk more about the protest and the history of ALEC and its influence on public education around the country are two guests. We are joined by Julie Mead. She’s a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She researches, teaches, and writes about topics related to legal aspects of education. Her research centers on legal issues related to special education and raised by forms of school choice.

It is clear that Tammy Duckworth makes Joe Walsh feel inadequate. Whether it is because of her military service, because he has nothing comparable to run on or talk about, or simply because she is a woman is unclear. However, his “Ashleigh, Ashleigh” extravaganza strongly suggests that it is women who make him feel inadequate. In any case, it follows a pattern that indicates that Walsh has severe issues with women. Personally, I suspect they make him feel inadequate because he is inadequate.
Boy With Autism Missing From Children’s Hospital in Chicago, Illinois Since June 19, 2012 Please Help Find Kahil Gray.
A 15-year-old boy with autism went missing Tuesday from the University of Chicago Medicine’s Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago, police said.
Kahil Gray was last seen around 4 p.m. at the hospital wearing a white shirt with blue stripes and light-blue jean shorts, according to an alert from police. A hospital representative said Kahil was not a patient, but rather was at the facility with his father to pick up forms.
"Once notified, we immediately activated our system and responded to assist the police and the parents to locate the child," said Mona Sonnenshein, chief operating officer of the University of Chicago Medicine, in a statement. "Our officers canvassed the campus and nearby areas looking for him."
Sonnenshein said footage from hospital video cameras shows Kahil leaving the facility and heading toward South Cottage Grove Avenue.
Police described Kahil, who lives near 92nd Street and Stony Island Avenue, as black with a medium complexion, standing 5-foot-6 and weighing 130 pounds.
"We are very worried," said Vaughn Gray, Kahil’s half-brother. "He is very friendly, will give anyone a hug but doesn’t speak well. He says very few words."
Kahil’s parents told the hospital he can recognize his name, though he doesn’t speak. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 312-747-8274.

More Chicago Sleaze from Joe Ricketts

destroythegop:

Right-wing extremist and proud Romney supporter Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade and owner of the both the Chicago Cubs and the Ricketts Plan for Inciting Racist Hatred, is seeking TAXPAYER FINANCING for planned renovations to Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

Republicans.  It’s what they are.

Next to the Dodgers, there has been one other team in the National League that I’ve always hated: The Cubs. Long Live The Jinx of The Billygoat.

Anybody who bothers to pay close attention to the constant feed of articles trickling from Google News can’t help but notice that it is the so-called ”lesser evil” Democrats–not the “evil” Republicans–who have literally been at the forefront of smashing this nascent rebellion against corporate capitalism to smithereens.

Recently, Rahm Emmanuel, the Democratic mayor of Chicago, with the full backing of a City Council dominated by Democrats, passed a series of draconian ordinances aimed squarely at the Occupy movement which impose harsh restrictions on free speech and assembly–moves that were criticized by the ACLU.

The same thing also occurred in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Democratic-controlled City Council enacted sweeping laws aimed at cracking down on Occupy-like actions when the Democratic National Convention comes to town, a silly dog-and-pony show, which, in the past has been directly funded by corporations.

Last December, Ed Lee, the Democratic mayor of San Francisco, sent an army of cops to forcibly evict the Occupy encampment in that town, partly because the Hyatt Regency hotel, owned by the Pritzker family of Chicago–billionaires who backed Barack Obama for president–didn’t want “vagrants and delinquents” nearby.

Roberts does give more credence to my political pushme-pullyou thesis here. Why it does not behoove Greens like him to give up petty personality squabbling and Pyrrhic candidacies to affirmatively engage and change the electoral system so that there is real political plurality in California or the USA remains a mystery.
