The US Army just announced new, more serious charges against accused WikiLeaker Pfc. Bradley Manning, The government is now charging Manning with “aiding the enemy” - a crime that carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole.
If the government claims that Manning leaked documents which aided and abetted the enemy, who exactly are they labeling as ‘the enemy?’ The millions of non-violent, pro-democracy demonstrators in Tunisia and Egypt who overthrew despots, in part sparked by the release of the Wikileaks cables that exposed corruption in their countries?
Sign this petition to Secretary Gates demanding the government drop its charges of “aiding the enemy” against Manning and stop demonizing pro-democratic movements abroad.
The Department of Justice has just announced additional charges against alleged WikiLeaker Pfc Bradley Manning; the soldier is now accused of ‘aiding the enemy.’
If the US government truly believes that Manning committed such a crime, then the government must view the pro-democracy protestors in the Middle East and North Africa - who have fought with life and limb for their freedoms after revelations of official corruption and abuse from those government cables Manning allegedly leaked - as enemies of the state.
This is a terrible slap in the face to those supporting peaceful, democratic change in a region home to some of the most oppressive governments on Earth.
Secretary Gates must drop the charges of aiding and abetting the enemy against Pfc. Bradley Manning and not demonize those fighting for democracy in their own countries.
