Later today, the California Assembly will vote on important legislation, AB 144, to ban the carrying of openly displayed handguns in public.
“Vote ‘YES’ on AB 144: Stop the Carrying of Openly Displayed Handguns in Public.
Those who carry exposed handguns in public are not required to undergo any training, and they may even be prohibited from possessing a firearm! This puts our families and communities at risk.
Help us pass this important measure that will put an end to the open carrying of handguns in public places in California."
Why? what is so unsafe about it? Most people who carry openly are more than qualified to carry, and often get stopped by the police to make sure the ARE allowed to carry. stop trying to take peoples fucking rights away. — Asked by razimob
First, thanks for posting my original post in your question. It kept me from having to look up my post.
Perhaps it would have been better for you to have used Disqus because it’s evident that you stepped right over the line about AB 144 that says Those who carry exposed handguns in public are not required to undergo any training, and they may even be prohibited from possessing a firearm!. Now the everyone in the Tumblrhood knows that you’re…um, a bit impulsive. Further, people walking around the guns is just plain intimidating and hostile to others — call me a pussy libtard©, but I’m in that group. I don’t get warm fuzzies from guns…sorry.
Next you assert Most people who carry openly are more than qualified to carry, and often get stopped by the police to make sure the ARE allowed to carry. Where? You don’t have any information about yourself on the home page of your tumblr that says where you live - so I can’t even take a swipe at your experience. I have memories of visiting 12 other states in the Union (Arizona, Idaho, Texas, Utah and Colorado being states most likely to have right to carry laws that I’ve visited) and live in California. In all places, I’ve seen armed guards with open side arms, but that’s all I’ve seen of private individuals carrying weapons. Now, were one to suggest that the San Diego Police Department walk up to people out of any kind of uniform to check persons qualified, I’d have some concerns because some really bad apples have been uncovered here in town. I know that most of the force is professional and embarrassed by that, but now that the City has budget problems, I don’t want to add one more task on their shoulders.
Next you demand that I stop trying to take peoples fucking rights away. Wanna talk about rights? Talk to me about the Establishment Clause and how religious zealots want to have prayer in all schools or how they want to ban same sex marriage or how the zealots want to deny women any kind of health care just because some people suggest that women shouldn’t make grave, autonomous decisions about what they can do with their bodies. Tell me about the War About Terror© and the War About Drugs© which have been used as a pretext to deprive citizens of their personal privacy and a justification to be capricious about who is given justice and who is not. Tell me about the likes of Rick Perry twisting the 10th Amendment to suit their own petulant desires. Tell me about how money is corrupting our electoral system, devaluing our vote. That’s the short list. Not going to talk about the Bill of Rights as a whole? You want to talk about Second Amendment rights only? Well, some citizen you are!
Another thing that I’d bet that you’ve never heard and you’ll scoff at, but there are some people like me who read the Second Amendment and don’t read it bifurcated as you and, say, the National Rifle Association does. We read the Second Amendment to affirm the National Guard (the militia) for states alone. Damn good thing that we never got elected to congress or sit on the Supreme Court, eh?
Really, thanks for giving me an opportunity to rant about how single minded so many Second Amendment advocates are. I’ve run out of patience for people who won’t put it in context with other rights so many Americans blabber about cherishing. Just remember, because you think you need a gun to defend other rights that you think you understand make you a lesser asset to the republic and weakens the republic. None the less, you’re completely invited to surprise me and show me how wrong I am about all of this (like your ACLU card with your NRA card or something) in a disqus comment to this. But please, please, please - let’s not reblog this pissing match and keep the content on everyone’s dashboards fresh.
