Missing E came along, and made everyone’s lives better. Rather than adding the features everyone obviously wanted, the company spent it’s time focusing instead of finding ways to ban, or make any user of the addon suffer annoying warnings until they removed it.

Tumblr’s trademark enforcers are not down with “Is Tumblr Down?”

Tumblr issued a C&D earlier this week to the website istumblrdown.com, accusing its owner, Zach Inglis, of trademark infringement and trading on Tumblr’s famous name.

[N]ot to be too too too cynical but I know all the people I follow on Tumblr and all the people who follow me are united in one thing and one thing only: their ravenous enthusiasm for brands. “I came for the sense of a new community, one with a keen feel for the visual but with a passion for language, too,” they say, “but it’s the brands that keep me here. Sweet Christ I love brands. Let the mountains collapse into dust and the oceans all boil, but give me brands,” they cry in the night. I personally remember, as a child, pleading with my parents to let me interface with my favorite brands. And interface we did. With the brands. The glorious, glorious brands.

It’s also a good example of the practiced and intentional cowardice of political reactionaries. Naturally they made a comment when they didn’t have to attach their name to it. I don’t allow that on my Tumblr or Disqus comments because I don’t believe there is a comment, thought or opinion worth considering unless the source attaches their name and/or e-mail address to it.
Relativistic positions about the validity of opinions or comments given anonymously are like oxygen to trolls and reactionaries.

There is no facility for civil discourse in Tumblr unless you install Disqus in your blog. It remains a simplex form of communication.

Cognitive Dissonance: The Fall of Ryking

steviemcfly:

This morning, I received a note from the tumblr staff alerting me to the fact that the petition had worked and ryking had been removed from his position. Thank you all for signing the petition.

First, he laughed at us. Then, he fought us. Then, he whined about cyberbullying…

I like Meg’s work. Still, I’m glad to see curated tags take a blow. The corporate nature of curation has narrowed the breadth of the viewpoints represented in the tag.
